What assumptions do you make about your accountant?

I'm originally from Oldham, I've got the accent to prove it and many times in my career, I've watched people's faces drop when they realise I'm the one doing their accounts, conducting their audit, or indeed the FD of the company.
Twenty-plus years running an accountancy practice in Spain hasn't changed how I talk. But it's definitely changed how I see the assumptions people make about who belongs in which profession.
I still remember what it felt like to be underestimated when I was a young man. Maybe you're carrying that same weight right now, that moment when you see the doubt flash across someone's face. That memory shapes how I show up for my clients now.
As their accountant, their CFO, their strategy advisor... I don't make assumptions about who's capable of what.
I've seen too many brilliant business owners who also don't fit the 'expected mould'.
So I ask better questions. I create more space. I look for what others might miss.
The best professionals I've worked with never tried to make me fit a template. They just help me build something that works for them.
What assumptions have you had to push past in your career?
