'How long does it really take to get compliant in Spain?'

This is the question I hear from every international finance director considering Spanish expansion, and the honest answer is: 3-6 months for basic compliance, but 12-18 months to be genuinely operationally confident.

Most timelines I see online are dangerously optimistic because they ignore the reality of Spanish bureaucracy and the learning curve of ongoing obligations.

Three factors determine whether you hit the shorter timeline or face costly delays:

  1. having local expertise from day one (not month six when problems emerge)

  2. understanding that compliance isn't just setup but ongoing monthly obligations

  3. recognising that each autonomous community has its own quirks that can derail your timeline.

The companies that succeed plan for the longer timeline but invest in proper guidance to achieve the shorter one.

What's been your experience with international expansion timelines versus reality?
