What British CFOs need to know before their first Hacienda audit

Three things I wish every CFO knew before their first Hacienda audit: proper documentation beats perfect Spanish, substance trumps structure every time, and your UK finance team's timeline expectations need recalibrating by about six weeks.

The companies that sail through aren't the ones with the most polished presentations, they're the ones who understood that Hacienda cares more about commercial logic than corporate perfection.

The biggest risk isn't getting something technically wrong.

It's setting up your Spanish operations without understanding how authorities actually assess international groups, then discovering that gap when you're already committed and your board's asking why Spain is taking twice as long as France did.
